Mr. President,
You have claimed many times that other nations and people who have acted against
our policies and our security as a nation "hate America" and you have phrased
the question 'why do they hate America?' I have a few points to make and
questions for you that as a citizen and voter, I would like answered.
Mr. President, buried in the 700-plus page energy bill currently under debate in
the U.S. Senate (a bill that you have pushed and said that you will sign) is a
provision that provides hundreds of millions of dollars worth of federal loan
guarantees for a power project apparently to be built by four former Enron
executives. One of the former executives is Thomas White, former head of Enron's
retail and energy trading in California during the energy crisis who later
served as your Secretary of the Army. The federal loan guarantee makes taxpayers
responsible for repaying the loan if the company defaults, or if the project
ends up not being economically feasible after its construction. The provision
states that if an energy company receiving such a loan guarantee defaults on
that loan, the bank to which the loan is owed "shall have the right to demand
payment of the unpaid [loan] amount from the Secretary " of Energy. Therefore,
taxpayers hold all the risk while energy companies reap all the rewards. Is this
the kind of 'energy policy" that Vice President was working on behind closed
doors and had refused to share with the American public? Mr. Bush, why do you
hate America?
Mr. President, a White House official, Philip Cooney who once led the oil
industry's fight against limits on greenhouse gases has repeatedly edited
government climate reports in ways to intentionally play down links between such
emissions and global warming according to internal documents attained with the
Freedom Of Information Act. As you know Mr. President, before joining you at the
White House in 2001, Philip Cooney was the "climate team leader" and a lobbyist
at the American Petroleum Institute, the largest trade group representing the
interests of the oil industry. Altering reports made by legitimate scientists to
lessen the impact of harmful greenhouse gasses is not only shameful and a
disgrace to a government "by the people", but an all out lie to the citizens of
the entire global community. Mr. Bush, why do you hate America?
Mr. President, a report released May 17, 2005 by the U.S. Public Interest
Research Group (U.S. PIRG) shows that Americans will spend upwards of $5 billion
extra on gasoline this year than due to poor automobile fuel economy policies.
Had the your administration tightened fuel economy standards four years ago -
mandating that cars and light trucks get 40 miles to the gallon (mpg) - American
consumers would already be enjoying substantial benefits. According to the
report, the U.S. would be consuming 350,000 fewer barrels of oil per day - more
than half of current U.S. imports from Iraq - if your administration had
mandated that the automobile industry make use of the fuel efficiency technology
that already existed in 2001. Instead, you have put economic and national
security at risk. Mr. Bush, why do you hate America?
Mr. President, a lead government attorney, Sharon Eubanks has said that the
government had proved that Big Tobacco engaged in a "decades-long pattern of ..
. misrepresentations, half-truths, deceptions and lies that continue to this
day." Yet, the Dept. Of Justice under your administration shocked tobacco
company representatives and anti-tobacco activists by announcing that the
government will not seek the $130 billion that a government expert had testified
was necessary to fund smoking-cessation programs. Instead, Justice Department
lawyer Stephen D. Brody said, the Justice Department under your administration
will ask tobacco companies to pay $10 billion over five years to help millions
of Americans quit smoking. In response, Dan Webb, lawyer for Altria Group's
Philip Morris USA and the coordinating attorney in the case said "We were very
surprised,. they've gone down from $130 billion to $10 billion with absolutely
no explanation. It's clear the government hasn't thought through what it's
doing." ...Mr. Bush, why do you hate America?
